About GOM

GOM was born in January of 2016 when my students and I decided to create an identity to our research group. We initially were developing the project Bioenergy Lagoon where sediments samples from the bottom of a coastal lagoon in Brazil were collected during 4 months in order to search for hydrogen-producing bacteria as an renewable fuel resource.

During the year 2016, other projects were unfolding as we were processing samples, extracting DNA and RNA, analysing data, creating campaigns, events and so on. The group is formed by professor Maria Luiza S Fontes (PhD), Professor Regina Antonio (PhD), Luan Aires (Ms student), Vinicius Salazar, Fernando de Freitas, Lisiane H. de Liz and Juana Bozzetto. Each member has an extremely important role for all work done by GOM. We have accomplished a lot since its creation: 2 workshops/courses, 2 master dissertations, 1 honours, 5 projects and isolation of bacterial strains with important biotechnological applications.

With the return of Dr Maria Luiza S Fontes to Australia, the group started to work remotely with new data through collaboration with the University of Technology Sydney.

The goals of GOM are to biologically produce renewable fuels and aggregated products such as pharmaceuticals and food supplements, and to investigate the role of microbes in anthropogenic impacted environments compared to pristine sites.
